Eine Societas Europaea ist eine Rechtsform für Unternehmen und stellt eine juristische Person dar, die börsennotiert sein kann. Daher wird die Societas Europaea auch öfters Europäische Aktiengesellschaft genannt.

Since the ratification of the Societas Europaea Act in several countries, some big companies changed their legal form to a Societas Europaea. April 26th 2007, the board of BASF voted to change from a stock corporation under German law (Aktiengesellschaft) to a Societas Europaea. January 14th 2008 the company's name was changed from BASF AG to BASF SE.
